Chopin Etude Op.10-No.3 이별곡 Jazz Ballade Ver.
(Subtitle: 이루어질 수 없는 사랑)
Chopin's 이별곡 is an extremely well-known piece.
It's famous for expressing the sorrow of parting in a way that's both calm and passionate, and truly beautiful.
I worked on this piece using only the theme section of 이별곡, which is familiar to so many people's ears, as the motif.
The song progresses in a form where the motif phrase repeats.
While working on this classical arrangement, a certain film came to mind.
It was An Affair To Remember (1958).
In the ending of this film, the protagonists' love is ultimately fulfilled, but there were many obstacles along the way before that happened.
Although the content of Chopin's 이별곡 has nothing to do with the film, as I reinterpreted it with a jazz ballade feel, the atmosphere and scenery from the movie kept coming to mind each time I worked on it.
I titled this arrangement 이루어질 수 없는 사랑 (An Impossible Love).
I tried to express the protagonist's heartfelt love within the piece — a sorrowful yet quietly accepting heart coming to terms with the parting.
I also tried to capture the moments where, even while knowing they must part, the passionate feelings that are too strong to hide come to the surface, along with the pain and the enduring of it.
This piece can be interpreted as a love that cannot be fulfilled between two people, but it can also be interpreted as the story of a wistful, unrequited love.
